It was an evening that promised so much but delivered so little for The Hippos. Due to Bovey’s pitch being temporarily unplayable, the evening fixture was moved to the Devon FA headquarters ground in Newton Abbot.
Town looked stunning in their new white 3rd kit, but started their game with out either of their usual forwards. However it was good to see Tom Beddow back in the team after his visit to a Torbay Hospital last Saturday, and he was modelling the latest in headwear fashion, a red and black skull cap supplied courtesy of Honiton Sports.
Liam Raybold’s starting line up made the perfect start with Blake Freemantle opening the scoring on the Astro turf after five minutes - but then it unravelled for the East Devon side.
Bovey equalised within a minute and then added a second with a thunderous strike past Ashford in the Honiton goal. 15 minutes later it was another great strike past Ashford to allow Bovey to take the lead.
Town did come close in the 28th minute when Giles Basson cut in from the left, beating the keeper, only to see his shot rebound off the post. Clinical Bovey then immediately went up the other end, lobbing the away keeper to make it 3-1.
The fourth was added a few minutes later. Town did pull one back when Giles once again cut in from the left and beat the home keeper. Bovey's 5th was added just before half time.
Bovey added a 6th on the stroke of the hour and did have a chance to make it 7 when the ref deemed the Hippo’s defence had made an infringement. The Bovey striker stepped up to stroke the ball home from the spot. However Ashford in Town's goal got down well to his left and Joe Dixon cleared the Hippos Lines.
So the Hippos know that they will have to raise their game against the Tigers on Tuesday night, when Axminster come to Mountbatten Park for a 6.30 pm kick off.
