Last Wednesday, the Exeter and District men’s over 60s triples bowls league restarted and the club’s opening match was away to Feniton.
The green was very heavy after the rain the night before and got heavier still as the skies opened up again for 10 minutes halfway through sending players scampering to the clubhouse to put on their waterproof kit (where`s all this water coming from).
The club can be proud of the team of Jack Hare, David Harris, Bob Sherborne, John Ellis, "Lovely legs" Elliott, and Jovial Ken Taylor, who played determined bowls under these dank conditions winning on both rinks to come home with maximum points - what a great way to start the season!
On Thursday, the club hosted local rivals Seaton in a four rink mixed triples match, and like many clubs who play on grass, the Seaton bowlers struggled to come to terms with the much faster all-weather surface, losing on all four rinks, although fair to say Seaton`s "Maestro" Roger Woolland`s team took young James Windsor and his team to the very last end before succumbing.
All of the Axminster skips, James Windsor, Brian Clark, Jovial Ken Taylor, and Allan Gyngell, led their teams by example, playing with confidence and accuracy, especially Allen with his team of John Heywood and Kath Manly, who not only won by a huge margin but managed to pick up a "Hot Shot" 9 on end 14 - legendary stuff!
These inter-club friendlies are the bread and butter of all bowling clubs, where the results are not as important as the warm amiable atmosphere generated by all the bowlers enjoying a sunny afternoon out.
If you would like to give bowling a try, please call Glen Elliott on 07933 517591, and arrange a taster session the club is situated just behind the new Bovis estate at Cloakham Lawns on the Chard Road and has ample parking, perhaps you may like to come with a friend or two and experience the gentle calm pace of this wonderful game.
