TAGB Tae Kwon-Do instructor, Chloe Lock, and eight students from Star Tae Kwon Do, Honiton, attended the South West Championships in Salisbury, along with experienced officials, Mr Holman and Mr Harris.

Joshua Cade and Nathan Boland were in the boys red belt sparring category, the biggest category of the day. It was young Boland’s first tournament and his achievement in winning bronze is as a new competitor was outstanding.

Cade was not amongst the medals on this occasion, but his performance made the coaches proud and it’s no surprise that he was chosen to receive the Instructors Junior Student of the Year award for 2012.

It was a good day for brother and sister duo Dan and Kat Nellist who landed bronze in the men’s red belt and silver in the girls green belt sparring categories.

Meg Grendon continued her success at tournaments with bronze in the individual red belt ladies sparring and also a gold in tag team sparring.

Helen Kirby won gold in for ladies 1st Dan Black Belt patterns. A sure sign of her development after her silver medal win in the Southern Championships last October.

Having had a 10-year break from Tae Kwon Do, she only returned to the sport last summer and her latest success’s are testament to her hard work.

Assistant instructor, Martin McClaughlin, had a very successful day landing a hat-trick of gold medals in the Men’s lightweight Black Belt sparring, gold in hand destruction and gold on the newly introduced Strike Mate.

Chief Instructor Chloe Lock also returned to East Devein with three gold medals after success in the ladies Black Belt sparring, ladies Black Belt Tag Team sparring and on the Strike mate using a hand technique.

The club are always very keen to welcome new students. They train at Honiton Sports Centre on Tuesdays and Sundays and can be contacted either by telephone on 01404 850033 or e mail startaekwondo@hotmail.co.uk.
