There was a plethora of new runners for Monday evening's October handicap runs in both the Junior and Senior events.

After a bit of head scratching, the results were finally announced and in the Junior runs the Sibley family were outstanding.

Beth Sibley won the race in 17:31, followed by Mollie Hansford, 14:52. Then came James Sibley in 14:40 with Matt Morbey 4th in 12:33.

All the first four had new PBs. Alex Hunt was fifth in 12:11. Despite a wonky left leg, Rebecca Creese stormed to victory in the senior race in a new PB of 29:13. Anna McLaughlin was 2nd, 30:23; Mark Hilder 3rd, 24:40; Andy Sayers 4th, 26:23 and Bernard Fry 5th, 22:35.

l It was no surprise that Harry Moore was in an ebullient mood after last Sunday's 10K race at Shepton Mallett as he won the over-70s race and was presented with a bottle of fine champagne for his efforts.

The 77-year-old, in his 40th race of the year completed in 77:11. Well done Harry!

l Four AVR runners decided to tackle the Clarendon Marathon on Sunday, which started at Salisbury and finished at Winchester on the Clarendon Way.

On a perfect day for running, some excellent performances were given by all four runners. First AVR home was Graham Newton in his first ever marathon.

He decided that a full fry-up breakfast would help him complete the course with energy to spare - well almost anyway. He finished in a most respectable time of 3:47:52 and was the first male over 60.

Just behind him, pushing him all way was Eleanor Wood, fourth lady overall and 1st vet over 50 in 3:48:02. Next in, competing in her first marathon since having a baby, was Amy Greenhalgh who, although rather weary at the end, was pleased to finish in 4:03:27.

Steve Reynolds looked out of his bedroom window at 6am and decided that it was a good day for running marathons, despite having run one the previous Sunday.

He finished in 4hrs 08 minutes, which was eight minutes faster than the New Forest Marathon, so he went home tired but, understandably, pleased.

All the AVR's really enjoyed the run and will be using some gentle persuasion to encourage more AVR participation next year.
