Devon’s Jamie Walker is the new World Indoor Bowls champion - by just one shot – and also became the first ever qualifier to win the world title.

Walker, of the Torquay United Indoor and Kings (Torquay) clubs, completed a remarkable run from the qualifying rounds to beat Aberdeen's Jason Banks 8-7, 7-7 in a nip-and-tuck final at Norfolk's Potters Resort.

Walker, ahead in both sets, had to hold off determined comebacks by fellow qualifier Banks, but he pulled out a couple of match-winning drives to snatch important shots at the end of both sets.

Walker, 31, who won an outdoors Commonwealth Games silver medal in the Pairs last August, had shown extraordinary coolness and class under pressure throughout his first appearance in the championships.

He knocked out a series of more fancied rivals like Greg Harlow, Mark Royal and then local crowd favourite Wayne Willgress in the semi-final.
