Four weightlifters (Jakin Talbot, Gabby Sull-Dunbar, Will Baylis and Chris Fotheringham) who train at Excelsior Athletic Development Club in Willand recently competed in the Wild Boar competition in Gloucestershire.

Each lifter has three attempts on snatch and then three attempts on clean and jerk in their respective weight categories, with the Devon quartet picking up three medals. All four are now ranked in the Top 5 in Great Britain in their age and weight category.

Weightlifting is a rare sport where people of different sizes and shapes can participate and compete on equal terms. The various weight categories and age groups mean that boys and girls, women and men can all challenge themselves and improve.

Coach James Marshall said: ‘It was great to see all our lifters get personal bests but even better to see the smile on their faces after they finished. The rankings are nice while they last but no one is complacent, they are all back training for the next competition.”
