September at Wiscombe Park started with the Five Clubs meeting. The man to beat was Ed Hollier in his Force HC – he set fastest time of the day on the Saturday – 36.56s - and bettered it on Sunday – a 35.79s run. This was not only a new Class record for Wiscombe Park, but also a new ASWMC regional record too, writes Nigel Cole.
It was a weekend of records for a number of drivers - Steve Wareham - Morris Mini; Ian Ingleheart – Westfield; and Paul Reynolds – Caterham – all entering the Wiscombe records book.
The weekend also saw the visit of two great British Hillclimb Champions – David Franklin, who won the Championship in 1978 and also the Sprint Championship in the same year. It was David’s first visit to Wiscombe since 1982. He was joined by Martin Bolsover – a triple Champion in 1982, 1983 and 1984. Martin was reunited with his Championship winning Pilbeam MP43 from 1984, now raced by Dorchester garage owner, Rod Thorne.
For the second race weekend Wiscombe welcomed the MG Car Club – an event that was first held in 1973. It is a special year for the MG marque – the Centenary of this classic manufacturer. The earliest car in the display, the M (Midget) Type was built in 1930 – and to reflect the future of motoring, there was the very latest electric MG HS PHEV.
On the hill, competitors competed in the MG Car Club Speed Championship, and another four new Class Records. It was Ed Hollier again topping the times - he finished with a best of 35.57s - beating the Wiscombe and regional records that he had set just a week earlier.
The Wiscombe Tillicoultry Quarries Championship is finely balanced. It is very tight at the top of the table – Paul Reynolds grabbed the lead after the MG Car Club event. However, four drivers are now all on 103 points – current Champion, Ian Ingleheart, Julian Rinaldi and Ed Hollier.
For Sunday, the members of the NHCA had exclusive use of the hill on their motorbikes and sidecars for the Arnold Gimblett event. The Top Ten Run Off was won by Tommy Hodges riding a KTM who set a time of 42.80s.
The next action at Wiscombe Park is the season finale on September 23 and 24.
