East Devon darting sensation Owen Bates made his debut on the Ally Pally stage with a thrilling PDC World Championship defeat to the experienced Steve Lennon.

Bates opened with a 96 against the throw but missed six darts at the double. Lennon, thankfully, also missed and both players entered the madhouse of needing a double one to win the first leg. Bates delivered and was on his way.

Flourishing in the unique atmosphere of the Ally Pally, Bates hit a 180 in the second, followed it with a 140 and nailed double top for a 2-0 lead. Lennon entered the game needing a win to keep his tour card and looked nervous. The Irishman bagged the third leg but sloppy darts opened the door for Bates to pounce and win the opening set.

The inspirational debut continued with a superb 101 out-shot to take the opening leg of the second set. Lennon responded to level but Bates struck a brilliant 108 to make it 2-1. The rollercoaster continued with Lennon taking it to the final leg and Bates replied with a brave 94 out-shot to claim the second set.

Momentum was with the East Devon star and when Lennon missed a barrage of doubles, Bates had another break of throw. Unfortunately, the game turned against him from this point, and Lennon grabbed a 2-1 lead. He then took advantage of some sloppy darts to win the set.

Lennon broke Bates to win his fourth leg in a row. Successive 140s and a bullseye finish saw Bates break back. He nearly took out the big fish 170 in the next leg but missed five doubles and Lennon pinched for 2-1.

Bates just missed the big fish again to sneak the next leg, hitting 25 with his final dart. Lennon swooped to take it to final set.

Lennon was throwing first and visibly growing in confidence, while Bates looked mentally tired. The deciding set saw the opening legs shared and the Ally Pally crowd cheering the name of Owen Bates, but credit to Steve Lennon, who held his nerve for the win.

Despite the final disappointment, a brilliant debut on the big stage and East Devon could have a global darting star of the future.
