Sidmouth continued their steady rise up the Devon Cricket League Premier Division table with a crushing win over Cornwood on a weekend when everyone tried to get their heads round new rules to tackle the spate of Covid-19 cancellations.
After bowling Cornwood out for 207 - Charlie Miles' ten overs cost only 2-16 - Sidmouth had normally reliable opener Isaac Thomas back in the pavilion for a first-ball duck.
But Alex Barrow (82no) and skipper Luke Bess (107no off 92 balls) put the Cornwood bowling to the sword, winning by nine wickets with 21 overs to spare.
It was Sidmouth's fourth win in six games.
Under the new 'scoring' system, league placings are now being calculated on a 'points-average' basis, because so many games have been falling victim to Covid 'isolations' - Paignton-v-Exmouth was called off at the weekend.
Not everyone is happy with the idea, although most sympathise with the league's predicament, and tables could become distinctly volatile as clubs rearrange Covid-cancelled matches over the next few weeks.
But Sidmouth (ave 14.88pts) are up to third place, behind Tiverton Heathcoat (18.11) and Sandford (17.44).
Sidmouth travel to Exeter this Saturday, while Tiverton take on Exmouth at The Maer.
Bess wasn't the only Sidmouth 'centurion' - Tom Moore hit 139 off 114 balls in the 2nd XI's 296-9 in C Division East. Credit Whimple for their reply, 232 all out.
Clyst St George still have the most points, but under the new system Sidmouth now top that division, from Exmouth 2nds and Braunton.
Similarly, Sidbury go above Shobrooke Park 2nds in G Division on points-average after Mark Smallacombe (47) and Dave O'Connor (61no) led them to an eight-wicket win over Kilmington (137ao).
Other Saturday league fixtures for local clubs include: A Division - Budleigh Salterton v Torquay, Barton v Seaton; B - Bideford v Kilmington; C East - Sidmouth II v Exeter II, Shobrooke Park v Upottery, Sandford II v Ottery St Mary, Clyst St George v Exmouth II; D East - Clyst Hydon v Kentisbeare, Sampford Peverell/Tiverton v Sidmouth III, Chardstock v Alphington/Countess Wear, Barnstaple v Uplyme/Lyme Regis; G - Exmouth III v Sidbury.
