Anglers are certainly enjoying their new-found freedom with many now traveling a little further in search of something just a little bit bigger or better.
Pete Gregory a member of Honiton SAC travelled to Minehead, where found Plenty of Smoothound Rays and Congers eager to take his Baits. Dan Hale travelled to the south Hams with Bryz Auger and Lee Waring for some lovely early season Plaice to about 2lbs.
I was pleased to be offered a trip aboard Atlantis out of Newquay where a good day’s mixed fishing was enjoyed, nothing huge was caught but plenty of Pollack to about 5lbs were landed from the reefs and I boated a small Huss of about 5lbs whilst Bream fishing with a light spinning rod.
I joined Honiton SAC on Sunday on a trip out of Beer, where the fishing was patchy with nothing special landed. However, Junior Reid Trevett did manage a fine plaice.
On the shore Marcus Ward from Torquay and Exmouth SAC member George Drew travelled to the shingle beaches in the East of our region in search of Plaice and both found this species eager to take their baits.
Jake Burton stayed local and fished an estuary finding a Flounder estimated at about 2lbs. John Davies also fished a local estuary in search of Thornback Rays and was rewarded with a fish of 9lbs 2oz.
Kennick Flyfishers fished the first round of the Snowbee Top Rod competition with top honours going to Alec Hoare of Abbotskerswell with 5 fish for a weight of 12lbs 2oz, Andy Gooding and Tom Hendy taking 2nd and 3rd respectively.
Laast Endacott visited Newbarn Farm taking his son Seth on his first fishing trip and fished Island Pool, where young Seth caught plenty of Roach and a 6lbs Common Carp. Plenty of fish are now showing at Rocombe Ponds with Neil Howell landing 22 Carp to 8lbs using waggler tactics.
The fish of the month competition is up and to qualify, please send me details of your catch either by messenger or email to johnsherlockfish@gmail.com. It will not always be the biggest fish that wins. Prizes are kindly donated by Sidewinder Lures and Newbarn Farm.
