AVR duo Denise Burgess and Sam Summers ran Greenbow RC’s Straight Eight race from Starcross to the quay, writes Dave Mutter.

The race took in some stunning scenery all along the river, with temperatures reaching 29 degrees. Denise crossed the line in 1:49:10 and Sam in 1:49:15.

The continuing heat wave did not put off the 515 runners who took part in the Totnes 10k race on Sunday. This mostly flat course starts and finishes at Totnes Leisure Centre and runs along the lanes and fields by the River Dart, on the edge of Dartmoor.

Two AVRs braved the sweltering heat, with Graham Newton finishing 67th and second MV 65, in a time of 46:16. Diane Newton was 342nd in 1:12:34, narrowly missing out on the second FV65 trophy by just nine seconds. However, she was still very pleased to beat her last year’s time by four-and-a-half minutes.
