While visiting their son and his family in Japan, AVR Graham Newton decided it would be a good idea to run the Kyoto Marathon, writes Dave Mutter.

Kyoto, the ancient capital of Japan, was a good choice for the ‘ancient’ Graham to run as it was mostly a flat course around the city, running through temples and shrines, along the river and through the botanical gardens.

Graham felt a little conspicuous being one of the very few Westerners running, but the Japanese people made him very welcome, and thought it was hilarious when he stopped to cuddle his baby grand-daughter, Ena, on the way!

All was going well until about the 38km mark when Graham’s toenail decided to be troublesome and he had to run the last 5km carrying one of his shoes! However, he managed to complete the race in 3:40:28 and 16th in his age group.
