On Saturday, one of the hottest days of the year when any sensible person would have been sunbathing on the beach, AVR Graham Newton was instead running ‘The Oke Croak’, a 10.5-mile self-navigating fell race over tracks and unmarked paths on North Dartmoor, writes Dave Mutter.
Like all fell races, this was a hilly course taking in both Oke and Yes Tors with over 2,000 feet of ascent.
Graham, not known for his navigating skills, managed to keep up with a group of runners whose knowledge of Dartmoor was greater than his own, leading him home in 1:47:00 to win the over-60 vet men’s category prize - a very welcome bottle of wine.
