AVR ladies tackle 2018 Women Can Marathon
PUBLISHED: 08:01 07 June 2018
Torrential rain greeted our intrepid lady AVRs as they arrived at the start line for the second Women Can (Women Only) Marathon on the final Sunday of May.
This did not bode well for the gruelling 26-mile, multi-terrain course that lay ahead of them which rambled across the spectacular clifftops, countryside and riversides of East Devon.
However, by mile two, the rain had stopped and a cheeky sun peeked out from behind the clouds.
Despite the course’s punishing nature, Eleanor Wood powered through, arriving home in an astonishing 4:15:02 – fifth in her age category, ninth overall.
Next to finish was Anna Mcloughlin who conquered the course in an impressive 6:06:23.
AVRs final fearless group – Sarah Herfet, Bec Davey, Angela Kerr, Sam Tooze and Sam Miller - linked hands for a strong united finish in an inspiring 6:24:22. A gesture which encapsulated the spirit of the day – women coming together to celebrate 100 years of their vote and that ‘they can’. Well, they did!
