In 2013, eleven AVRs competed the National 3 Peaks Challenge, an event that involves reaching the highest peaks of Scotland, England and Wales, all within 24 hours, writes Dave Mutter.
Almost five years later to the day, AVRs Richard Hale, Graham Newton and Paul Tolchard ascended Slieve Donard in the Mourne Mountains of Northern Ireland, to complete the challenge of the fourth highest regional UK peak.
A steep climb starting at sea level follows the Glen River up through a conifer forest to the open moorland.
A difficult undulating stony track leads to the granite summit at 883 metres. The runners marvelled at the spectacular mountain views in bright afternoon sunshine in all directions.
Excitement and adrenalin levels were high for the long descent and the anticipated Guinness waiting to be drawn at McCann’s Pub on the Newcastle seafront.
