Three AVR members ran the Oke Croak on Saturday morning and the race had the best turn out for a few years for hosts Okehampton running club with 66 competitors, writes Dave Mutter.
The race distance was approximately 16km with 628 metres of climb and took paths along the Okement river and up on to the moor.
From then on it was self-navigation to check points at Oke tor followed by Yes tor. Finally there was a steep rocky downhill to a bit of road and paths back to Simmons park and the finish.
The weather was overcast and humid but clear and recent rain made for a few wet and boggy areas!
Andy Vallance of Okehampton running club lead most of the way, but was over taken in the latter part by Tom Allan of Wild Running and James Green of AVR.
They both had a battle to the end with Tom just nabbing first place in 1:18:27 and James coming so close only two seconds behind.
The first two runners had both beaten Tim Lenton’s course record of 1:18:40. Matt Clist had a fine run coming in fifth in 1:25:59. The women’s race had some strong runners and Ami Yetton of Plymouth Harriers winning in 1.35.08; Robin Carter was very pleased to finish seventh lady, 35th overall and first over 50 lady in 1:44:34.
