Last weekend, AVR's Jake Smith represented Great Britain in the 10,000 metres at the European U23 Championships held in Gavle, Sweden, writes Dave Mutter.

The race took place on the first evening of the championships and included several very strong runners.

The time for the first two laps was fairly slow and so Jake decided to inject some much needed pace and lead the race for several laps.

With four laps to go, eventual winner, Jimmy Gressier from France, made a break which split the field, but Jake remained in the mix to finish eighth out of 25 runners, in a new PB, taking 14 seconds of his previous best time, finishing in 29:01:08.

Friday night saw Carolyn Nation and Sam Summers make the short distance to Chudleigh for their annual carnival road race.

Wonderfully organised by Andy Palmer and the team, the five-mile and 903 yard race was won Tom Merson of Exmouth Harriers in 29:07.

The first female home was Marie Faithful in 37:45. Carolyn Nation came in 210th in 1:02:19 and Sam Summers was 213th in 1:06:54.
