The August Medal for the seniors at Axe Cliff was poorly supported due to holidays and Open competitions taking place on neighbouring courses, writes Helen Kenworthy.

In the event, in what were tricky conditions, two players returned scores of 74 nett, with the winner, on countback, being Phil Wilkins (15) with Mick Tomes (17) having to settle for second place. Third, with a nett 79, was Sid Pember (20).

On Saturday Axe Cliff staged the Combination Open which is for teams of men’s, ladies’ or mixed and it proved to be a very good day.

There were various prizes on offer, but the main one was for the team event.

The first ladies were the team of Sandra Walker, Barbara Cummings and Penny Lyne, (Penny is from Sidmouth Golf Club).

The first mixed team were the one comprising Peter Knighting, Margaret Kenchington and Tony Stone.

The first men’s team were Paul Jepp, Paul Bowler and Terry Thorn who all hail from Dawlish GC.

The Axe Cliff men played for the Carnival Cup and first, with 39 points was Stuart Mackie with Chris Glover taking second with his score of 36 points and Mike Rymer took third with 33 points.

There were three two scored by Matt Donnan, Mike Wickinsans and Alan Cooper.
