Axe Cliff ease to Sidmouth success

In glorious summer weather last Friday 36 Axe Cliff seniors contested the Three Club Shield, a stableford with three clubs only, one of which must be the putter, writes Janet Dack.

Scores were remarkably good with the winner Hugh Willis (22) netting 35 points, one ahead of Tony Horton (25) who claimed second place ahead of Alan Vincent (17) on count back.

There were a brace of two’s fro m Rob Heard and Tony Horton.

On the Thursday Sidmouth were the visitors and a closely fought match ended in a 4-1 success for the home club.

No game among the six was closer than the final match in which the Axe Cliff duo of John Mant and Malcolm Glass fought back from dormie five down to square the game on the final green!

The winning pairings for Axe Cliff were; Chris Walker and Bill Polley, Rob Grove and Peter Rollason and Stuart Mackie and Leighton Morgan.

The other half point was won by Phil Wilkins and Jack Bannister.
