The past one was another busy and exciting week for the Axe Cliff seniors, writes Dave Bruce.

Decent weather returned for our re-arranged Captain’s Away Day at Wrangaton, which saw some 30 members taking part and, this time, without the ‘fog woe’, it allowed for 18 holes of ‘interesting golf’!

On the Moorland front nine, we were accompanied by sheep on every tee and along the fairways. The greens were in great condition and the fairways were being cleaned by a tractor pulling a revolving brush to sweep up the droppings into a trailer. Many balls were lost, hence there were 125 blobs recorded !

All eyes were on the defending nine-hole champion, Nigel Garwood, who scored 19 points on the back nine 51 days earlier - before fog stopped play!

This time he went one better with 20 points, but, sadly, after 18 holes! The parkland back nine holes were in good condition, but caught a number out with the close proximity of many mature trees, which we Axe Cliff golfers are not used to.

Sheep-lover Steve Gibson played very well and was overall champion with 38 points, closely followed by Gerry Turner on 36 points.

Third and fourth went to countback with 35 points with Malcolm Glass just edging it from Richard Orsman and treasurer Bill Polley took fifth spot with 31 points.

The best front nine score went to John Mant with 17 points and secretary Mick Tomes won the back nine with the same score.

Nearest the pin in two on the ninth went to our professional, Andrew Thompson, with a near perfect swing.

Rob Grove was nearest the pin on the 12th and Gerry Turner on the difficult 17th.

At the end of the meeting Steve Gibson was presented with the Geoff Hubbard Trophy, which we have been proud to play for since 2010.

Last Friday, on a hot sizzling day, we entertained a strong team from Bridport, with every game going to the last hole, but home advantage helped us to win by four-and-a-half to a half.

This brought honours even as Bridport won their home match against us by exactly the same score.

Our winning pairs were: Dave Bruce/Brian Thompson; Bob Graham/ Adrian Bishop; Rob Grove/Gilbert Cox; Bill Polley/ Peter Hornsby. Malcolm Glass and John Mant halved their game.
