Put together some fine weather, a few friends, some clubs, plenty of golf balls - just in case- and a superb looking course what better way than to spend a morning, writes Rob Grove.

Unless, that is, you happen to be playing a medal round and that’s when the golfing gremlins take over!

What starts off as a very promising handicap qualifier suddenly turns into the golf round from hell when an eight and two sevens appear on your card - and yet you know you have been playing well.

As most of the field agreed this was a day for some very good scores and so it turned out. The winning three places all recorded the same score of 68, after handicap adjustments, and only separated by the countback rules. In third was the persistently reliable vice captain, Tony Strong, but he was outdone this week by Dave Weston who, in turn, was ousted by that canny Scot again, John Hannah.

I think all three can expect a visit from the handicap fairy - oh yes they can! For the rest of us, the practice ground and golf professional beckon; we need help.
