In spite of the overcast skies (at least it stayed fine) the Captains’ Drive-In at Axe Cliff on Saturday was a huge success, writes Janet Dack.

It started well when all three captains of the club, Barbara Cummings (Lady Captain), Rob Grove (Senior Captain) and Paul Clode (Club Captain), found the fairway with their drives. The first fairway had been liberally scattered with markers as members tried to guess where each drive would finish with the lucky winners being Richard Gibbons (Lady’s Prize), Steve Bond (Senior’s Prize) and Paul Curtin (Captain’s Prize).

There followed a Texas Scramble for teams of three. The competition was well received and keenly -contested and produced some close scores. The winners were Geoff Greenslade, Andy Trivett and Alan Paul with 52.8. In second place were Nigel Garwood, Simon Sweetland and Peter Knighting with 55.1 and in third were Andrew Hellier, Paul Williams and Iain Bain with 57.1. The fourth place was taken by Brian Board, Andy Gabb and John White with 57.7.

The prize for the best Mixed team went to Caroline Board, Tony Snell and Malcolm Glass with a score of 57.9. Prizes were presented by all the captains in a packed clubhouse where members enjoyed a barbecue as well as liquid refreshment. As a result of the day the captains’ charities received a boost with 160 pounds being raised.

If the year continues as well this we can all look forward to good golf, good companionship and good times at Axe Cliff.
