Axe Cliff Lorraine Cup joy for Jill and Gruesome Cup success for Rob and Jo

The Axe Cliff ladies’ section saw three competitions held on the one day with the playing of the Monthly Medal, the Lorraine Cup and next round towards the Axe Cliff Cup, writes Dave Bruce.
Once again the scores were close, especially at the top of the board, with Jill Wellington winning the Lorraine Cup with a nett 73, but only on countback from Helen Kenworthy, who also had the lowest gross score. The positioning remained the same for the Axe Cliff Cup with third spot going to Caroline Bond on nett 75.
For the Monthly Medal, third place went to our newest lady, Jo Hopgood, who plays off 54 so is only eligible for the Cup competitions off 36, but she had an excellent medal round coming in with a nett 74.
Well done, Jo.
● Last week the Scratch and Handicap Cups were completed with Helen Kenworthy taking the Scratch with a gross 93 and Paula Heasman, another newer member playing well, won the Handicap Cup with an impressive nett 67 and getting her handicap cut from 34 to 31.
Jo Donmall, on countback, took second spot from Caroline Bond both on nett 73. Jo Donmall continued her good form, winning the Price Cup, the ladies’ handicap knockout, beating Paula Heasman, who, despite having her handicap cut, still managed to take Jo to the 17th.
● Last Saturday, the ladies combined with the seniors to play the mixed Gruesome Cup in a greensome format over 15 holes with food afterwards provided by the organiser Barbara Cummings.
Overall winners were the strong pairing of Rob Grove and Jo Donmall on 38 points from Pauline Willis and Chris Walker on 36 points.
● The Axe Cliff August Medal was strongly competed with solid Stuart Mackie taking Division One with a nett 67 from Anthony Hellier on nett 71. Anthony’s father Cyril took Division Two with a good nett 70 from Danny Taylor on nett 81.
Three players carded twos, Paul Clode, Anthony Hellier and his brother Andrew, making it a Hellier day. The senior section had 44 members take part in the monthly stableford played on a warm, windless Friday and the conditions helped make scoring easier. It was the in-form Steve Gibson who took first place with an excellent 39 points.
He was closely followed by that popular Welshman, Leighton Morgan, on 38 with third position going to countback separating David Lacey and Mick Tomes on 37 points. David and Mick were the only players to make a two.
