The Axe Cliff ladies were fortunate last week to be blessed with the only warm sunny day of the week, with the threat of showers passing out to sea or up the Axe Valley, during the staging of their first medal competition of the year, writes Dave Bruce.

They only had a small smattering of rain to keep them on their toes and it certainly worked for one lady, who was heard to say before she went out something like: “I will never play to my handicap.”

Well, she did on this occasion! What’s more, Stella Thompson, the lady in question, did well enough to get cut another six shots to 22.5 with a nett 71.

It clearly shows that the lessons provided by husband Andrew (Axe Cliff club professional Andrew Thompson) really are first class!

Second was Helen Kenworthy with a creditable nett 76.

Not far behind came Caroline Bond in third position with a nett 79.
