Last Saturday, on a very calm and dry day, Axe Cliff held its 2018 Millennium Trophy competition, wonderfully organised by Helen and Alan Kenworthy, writes Dave Bruce.

It was played in the popular Texas Scramble format in mixed teams of four from the whole club.

Partly helped by the good weather the teams produced some great medal scores.

Fourth place went to golf professional Andrew Thompson, his wife Stella, Dave Bruce and Steve Bond with a score of 62.7. This score was one under gross despite Steve breaking his driver in a freak accident on the 17th!

Third were Phil Hellier, club captain Dave Morgan, Richard Orsman and ladies’ vice captain Jill Wellington, with a net 61.

In second place, also with a net 61, but a better back nine, were the foursome of Andrew Hellier, Steve Reed, Jim Whiting and 82-year-old Geoff Hughes, who didn’t stop talking all the way round in between taking his tablets and eating his sandwiches.

The overall winners were the very strong team of Richard Gibbons, Chris Glover, Steve Havencroft and lady captain Caroline Bond.

The winning team had an amazing round of 12 gross pars, five gross birdies and only one bogey being four under gross giving a final competition medal score of nett 58.5.
