Just for a change the weather held for Axe Cliff golfers on the first Sunday of April and so a good contingent of the main club were able to play their Monthly Medal and record some first class scores, writes Dave Bruce.

The overall winner in Division One was young Anthony Hellier, who, playing off 11, netted a 67 to edge out Jonny Potter, also playing off 11, on countback.

Not far behind them was the steady Chris Glover, playing off 12, with his nett score being 69.

Division Two also saw some closely fought games with Simon Sweetland taking first place with a magnificient nett 67 off a 14 handicap going out in 41 and back in with 40. He amassed one birdie and seven pars, beating Mitch Hopkins by one shot. Mitch netted 68 and made light work of his 23 handicap. Third place went to vice captain Steve (Ronnie) Reed, who finished third on countback with a creditable nett 68.

Captain Dave Morgan had a very interesting round in Division Two, finishing fourth with a nett 71, but could have got a nett 65 if he could only stop getting penalties!

He played the wrong ball on the sixth to pick up a two shot penalty and, not content with that, had to play three off the tee on both the 12th and 18th holes, giving a total of six penalty shots in the round! We don’t like seeing grown men cry, so Dave held a brave face!
