Mick Swann lifted the Axe Cliff Silver Salver Trophy for the third year running and what makes the hat-trick of success all the more impressive is that he has achieved it in different teams each year, writes Dave Bruce.

This year he partnered Pete Casey and Paul Curtin. Pete is not far behind, having been in the winning team for the last two years. It was Paul’s first.

The competition can be fraught, with one player’s score to count on the first six holes, then two to count on the next six, leaving all three scores to count on the final six – so lots of pressure.

The winning score was an amazing 73 points, closely followed by Neil Moorcraft, Gerry Turner and Malcolm Glass with 72 and favourites Brian Thompson, Adrian Bishop and Leighton Morgan pipped into third spot with 71.

Alan Vincent, Mick Swann and Neil Moorcraft got twos, but the best two came from Geoff Hughes on the last and difficult 18th with a cool 8ft putt!

● The Axe Cliff ladies enjoyed another sunny and warm day for their Monthly Medal, the second round of the putting competition and next round of the Axe Cliff Cup.

The conditions suited some more than others, but the result was close with the in-form Stella Thompson taking first spot with a nett 70 and having her handicap cut again. (Is she getting free tuition from pro husband Andrew?). Second and third went to a countback on nett 72 with Helen Kenworthy stealing it from Jo Donmall. Two teams of three ladies represented Axe Cliff at Thurleston Golf Club in the County Bowmaker and did well to finish in the middle of the field on a grey misty day.

● In two recent trophy competitions, it was Andy Trivett who took the honours,

Andy landed the Geoff Davis Trophy with a fine score of 39 points.

In what was a close contest, last year’s captain, Steve Anning, also scored 39, but was edged into second place on countback. Alan Cooper, who scored a solid 36 points, took third place.

Meanwhile, Mike Rymer won the Sander Stevens Trophy with a score of plus six.

Second was Tristian Wakely’s with plus three with Steve Anning, once again playing well, taking third place.
