Axe Cliff Senior success for Roger Hill
PUBLISHED: 17:37 01 May 2019
The past week was another busy one for the Axe Cliff Seniors and their captain, Mick Swann and his hard-working committee with Roll Ups, club matches and the weekly competition while also getting things ready for the club’s Open which takes place this Friday (May 3).
The Tuesday Roll Up was contested in wet and windy conditions, but they did not put Exeter University's, former favourite statistician Roger Hill, off his game, as he took the honours with a splendid 37 points.
It was also good to see Terry Bell on the leader board, taking second place with 31 points though he was helped by Dave Bruce missing a number of short putts waiting for Geoff Hughes to finish his stories which meant Bruce took third spot with a modest 30 points.
Geoff's sandwiches, however, made up for his minor over-talking!
The away match at Bridport was closely fought, but they proved too strong for Axe Cliff, winning the match four-and-a-half to one-and-half.
The only success on the day for Axe Cliff was the pairing of Dai Evans and fellow countryman Dave Morgan, who won their match three-and-two.
The half point was banked by the pairing of Neil Moorcraft and Norman Bowles.
Despite the weather there was a good turnout for Friday's Monthly Medal meeting and the first Summer Eclectic of the year. The scores highlighted the conditions and all the top places were decided by countback!
The overall winner was in-form treasurer Bill Polley with a net 74, edging Dave Weston, also in the best of form lately, into second place.
There were three players vying for third spot all having a net 75, but you cant pull the wool over Steve Gibson's eyes and he had the best countback from Mick Wickens and 80-year-old Gerry Turner. There was only one two, and, to everyone's surprise, it was scored by Nick Povey without Perky Purdy's support! Even more surprising was it was on the difficult 18th hole.
Whether you are a member or not you are most welcome to join in or regular Wednesday nights Roll Up which starts at 5pm from which time you will be able to enjoy good company and what is a great course.
