Axe Cliff seniors brushed off the fact that the Friday weather was playing up with freezing rain and strong winds as they met to contest the final round of their Winter League competition, writes Dave Bruce.
Bill Polley and David Evans went out knowing that they would have to score net birdies on all 15 holes to come in with the 45 points that would see them crowned overall champions.
If the weather had been kinder they may have stood a slim chance and they did still manage to return a fine score of 31 points to win the day’s honours. A close second, with 30 points, was the pairing of Gilbert Cox and Robbie Robinson and third were Bob Graham and Norman Bowles with 29 points.
It all meant that after another campaign, the overall Axe Cliff Winter League champions are Brian Thompson and John Hanna with a fantastic 213 score, meaning an average 35.5 points per round over the six rounds of the league.
Second were Bill Polley and David Evans with a very good score of 200 points and the ‘old’ Gilbert Cox and ‘young’ Robbie Robinson can be proud of their third place finish, achieved with a score of 195 points.
