Usually a medal round holds fear and trepidation for most of the competitors, but when it is the first round of four to count there seems to be more determination than ever to complete a score, writes Rob Grove.
The first round of the Axe Cliff Seniors’ Masters tournament, which attracted a large number of participants, proved a close affair but, with other scores to count, any one of the remaining competitors could yet lift this prestigious trophy.
As it was some of the more consistent golfers came out on top with Peter Knighting (15) scoring a commendable net 69.
He was closely followed by the reliable Tony Strong (7) with 70 and the evergreen Keith Wilson (13) also with 70.
In very windy conditions there were some seemingly high scores, but this competition brings out the best from those stubborn senior golfers from Axe Cliff and their best is yet to come. Leaders beware! There were four twos recorded during the round by Roger Hill, Simon Wellington, Nick Stanton and Tony Strong. The next round is eagerly awaited.
