Axe Cliff seniors’ Masters success for Tony Strong

The third round of the Axe Cliff Seniors’ Masters was played in brilliant, continuous sunshine, writes Helen Kenworthy.

The medal was won by the established leader Tony Strong (9) with a 72 nett which increased his overall lead in the event with just one final round to go.

Second was John Mant (19) with a nett 74, while two players returned scores of 75 and so third place, determined by countback went to Malcolm Glass (19) with Peter Knoghting (16) the player to miss out on the prizes.

In addition to the Medal event, players of 21 handicap and above competed for the Warren Cup which was won in a close finish by Tony Horton. There were two twos from Gilbert Cox and John White.

The Axe Cliff men played The Presidents Prize and first, after countback, was Peter Petherbridge with 34 points.

Tom Spencer (34) was edged into second and Mike Wickins claimed third with his score of 33 points.

Charlie Griffen had the only two.

A mixed greensomes competition, The Brittany Ferries, was contested and the winning pair were Steve and Caroline Bond who will go on to Honiton to play in the second round.

Dougy and Glenda Board were second and there were two twos struck by Dougy and Glenda Board and Tony Stone and Margaret Kenchington.
