The Axe Cliff ladies section played a match to qualify for the Vets Bowl during which, two of the newest lady members scored so well that their handicaps were reduced to reflect their ability, writes Pete Motson.

The first two places were taken with a good net score of 69, with the countback in favour of Anne Jarvis. The minor places went to Danusia White and Caroline Bond. Both Anne and Danusia will now be playing off a handicap of 32.

Meanwhile, the Axe Cliff senior section contested the September Medal and there was a close finish for the top three places.

Bill Polley, playing off 16, took first place with a nett 72 and Geoff Hughes, playing off 19, was the runner-up with a nett 73. Third place was decided by countback with Phil Christmas (23), edging out Rob Grove (17) after both players scored nett 74s.

A brace of twos were recorded and scored by Norman Bowles and A Morgan.
