Axe Cliff success for Vincent and Cox

Archant

The latest round of the Axe Cliff Seniors Winter League programme seems to have confirmed that which many of us have feared for weeks - last year’s winners are not relinquishing their title without a fight, writes Rob Grove.

Alright, so they didn’t win this week, but a steady round in cold, windy conditions certainly consolidated their position of retaining their crown. In fact, captain Rob Grove and his partner Roger Wright came close to beating the holders Alan Vincent and Gilbert Cox with both teams scoring 34 points in this 15 hole stableford format and the best score to count on each hole.

The winners this week, and he did say that this competition is not a sprint, but a marathon, was secretary, Mick Tomes and his playing partner, Mike Jamieson with 36 points.

Mick also helped himself to a two along with John Hanna and the ever reliable Tony Strong. However, the writing is on the wall and it will take a couple of good rounds by others in the competition to wrest the title from the reigning champions - we’ll have a better idea in a fortnight’s time.

Axe Cliff men played round six of their Winter League with the format being better-ball stableford.

First place went to the pairing of Jin Hong and Rob Nichols with 45 points. Second were Jimmy Matthews and Pete Northcott (44) and third were Alex Todd and Craig Trivett (43).

There were six twos, recorded by Richard Gibbons, Jin Hong, Rob Nichols, Alex Palmer, Anthony Hellier and Pete Northcott.
