The good weather returned to Axe Cliff for Friday’s playing of the annual Yellow Ball trophy, writes Dave Bruce.

Thirty-nine players took part in teams of three with the format being stableford with the best two scores to count on each hole with the yellow ball player counting double.

Each player has the chance to play the yellow ball six times provided it is not lost when the team simply reverts to normal white ball scoring.

As an incentive, you were given a bonus point if you returned the yellow ball. Only four teams lost theirs.

The overall winners were the strong combination of Dave Weston, Brian Thompson and Tony Strong with an amazing 118 points, meaning they had a average of six-and-a-half points per hole and must have scored well with the yellow ball.

Second spot went to Paul McGuire, Leighton Morgan and Nick Povey with a creditable 113 points. Edward Backhouse, Neil Moorcraft and Steve Gibson came third with 112 points. Chris Jowett and Tony Strong carded twos.
