Both Axminster’s Gents and Ladies’ teams have enjoyed success in their first County matches of the new season, writes David Harris.

The men won their Devon Over-60s league game with Budleigh (77-72) with winning rinks at home of Peter Morgan, Eric Skeemer, Doug Looskan, and Paul Moffitt (25-13) and away of John Chance, Alan Preece, Roger Woolland, and John Gough (21-19) - Tony Savage, Howard Keep, Norman Denslow, and Charlie Barber also achieved a commendable tie away (17-17).

The Ladies won their Devon Foxlands game against Dawlish by four shots with a winning home rink of Joan Quick, Pam Hunter, Jean Kesterton, and Chris Barber (21-15) and away success for Brenda Edwards, Chris Hobbs, Judith Moffitt, and Janet Parsons (28-14).

In the three away mixed friendly matches, Axe won at Sidmouth (89-42) with excellent wins on all three rinks - Joan Quick, Barbara Mowatt, Ann Clayton, and Ken Quick (29-14), John Chance, Jean Kesterton, Neil Solomon, and Brian Parsons (31-15), and Lilian Lovatt, Pam Clark, Alison Glyde, and Brian Clark (29-13). They lost narrowly at Budleigh in a two-rink match (35-42) with a winning rink of Joan Quick, Sheila Cox, Ann Clayton, and David Harris (18-15) and at Madeira (52-66) despite the gallant efforts of Les Monk, Pam Clark, Brian Clark, and Margaret Crompton (32-11),
