Axminster bowlers enjoy big win over Taunton

Axminster won two of the three friendly matches they played last week, writes David Harris.

First up they were 77-59 winners over visiting Dunkeswell with wins for Phil White, David Harris, and Sheila Martin (24-10), Martin Apsey, Les Clark, and Margaret Crompton (22-12), and Pam Clark, Steven Apsey, and Derek Pheby (16-14).

Next up a visit to Honiton ended in an 82-53 reversal and there were no Axminster winners last Honiton.

That defeat was soon forgotten though as the team, delivered the goods in the next friendly, beating visiting Taunton BC 82-53.

Here there were wins for Barbara Mowatt, David Harris, and Frank Bridge (36-9), Morrison Brown, Howard Keep, and John Hill (20-9) and Les Clark, Margaret Brown, and Tony Cable (18-10).

There should have been two other matches, but neither Taunton Deane of Hemyock were able to raise teams to play Axminster.

The one outing for the club in the Over-60s League saw a trip to Tiverton Borough end in a 46-22 defeat and there were no Axminster winners in Mid Devon.

Last Saturday there was an inter-club round-robin competition held at Axminster and after some splendid bowling it was Barbara Mowatt and Derek Pheby who took the individual prizes. The excellent lunch was kindly donated by Lilian Lovatt and expertly prepared by ladies captain Ann Clayton and all at the club extend grateful to them and to the helpers involved. Everyone involved enjoyed the day very much with the added bonus of their being perfect weather.
