Axminster bowlers enjoyed an excellent win at Wrington (Bristol), bagging success on three of the four rinks played on their way to an 88-71 victory, writes David Harris.

The winning rinks were; Derek Pheby, John Hill, Brab Hallowes, and Ann Clayton (32-13), John Packham, Joan Quick, Budgie Hallowes, and George Mabon (23-16), and Phil White, Barbara Mowatt, David Harris, and Brian Clarke (19-18). However, before that success they lost their previous two mixed friendlies, going down 77-34 at Kingsteighnton.

They then lost 76-50 at home to Honiton with the one winning rink being the one of Les Clark, Margaret Brown, and Brian Clark. The planned meeting with Severals fell foul of the weather.

In the Over-60s League games there was a 62-25 defeat suffered at Tiverton West End. This, despite a 19-18 last wood win by George Mabon, Frank Bridge, and Sid Milburn, followed by a 44-23 home win over Bradninch with wins on both rinsk; Tony Cable, Howard Keep, and Doug Looskan (22-9) and John Ellis, Sid Milburn, and Bob Sherborne (22-14).

Twenty-one members attended the annual captains’ day when all enjoyed an excellent lunch prepared by ladies captain Ann Clayton before participating in a round-robin competition won by the quartet of Phil White, Pat Parham, Norman Copland, and John Hill.
