Axminster bowlers battled through inclement weather to get their Finals Weekend completed, writes David Harris.
Steven Apsey emerged from the two days of action with no fewer than four trophy wins.
He was successful in the four-wood singles, which saw Doug Looskan finish as the runner-up. He then paired up with Ken Webster to defeat John Hill and David Harris in the final of the men’s pairs four-wood before teaming up with Phillipa White to beat Margaret Crompton and George Mabon in the final of the mixed pairs (four wood). His other success came in the final of the Open Singles, again four wood, in which he defeated David Harris.
However, Harris and Apsey also met in the final of the men’s 101 and this time the tables were turned with Harris winning and Apsey having to settle for the runners-up slot!
In the final of the ladies’ four-wood singles, Eva Cole enjoyed success against Ann Clayton, who then bounced back to defeat Chelsea Maher to win the ladies’ 101 competition.
Steven Apsey appeared in his sixth final when he finished as runner-up to James Windsor in the men’s two-wood singles event and Margaret Crompton enjoyed success in the ladies’ two wood singles – beating Brenda Edwards – and then she paired up with David Harris to win the mixed pairs three-wood against Ann Burn and James Windsor.
Last, but certainly not least, in the Non Winners competition final, Mike Mellow was the winner and the Ann Burn the runner-up. The final of the inter-club selective triples is yet to be played.
Many thanks must be afforded to Ann Burn, who ran the competitions so efficiently.
Away from Finals Weekend, the club enjoyed little success, losing both Over-60s games and a mixed friendly against Kingsteighton.
