Newtown 0, Axmouth United 1 Following two weeks of abandonment’s Axmouth faced a tough away assignment against Newtown on a difficult pitch that made it difficult for either side to play flowing football.

In an evenly-contested first half chances were very much at a premium with both sides struggling to create any clear openings and neither keeper had too much to worry them as the half ended in stalemate.

From the restart Axmouth enjoyed a bit more possession and duly broke the deadlock when Christian Burridge latched onto a through-ball before crossing for Asa Sandman to control and thunder home on the half volley to see the visitors take a 1-0 lead. A Reece Hales fierce strike destined for the top corner brought a flying save from the home keeper as the Axe’s looked to increase their lead which became more fragile as the half wore on and Newtown through everything they could at them to get the equaliser.

The visitors defence stood firm though with central pairing Joe Berry and Man of the Match Mike Challis outstanding, as they saw their side home and gain a valuable three points.

United boss Laurie Forino said: “That was a real test following the fortnight in which we had no action. The lads have shown a great team spirit and work ethic which is really pleasing to see. We now face further tough tests with an away trip to Cheriton Fitzpaine next week and entertain them at home the week after and with them also going well both sides will be up for the challenge.”
