Axmouth United 3, Thorverton Reserves 1 Axmouth United continued their fine start to the season with a workmanlike performance.

United began the game looking a shade out of sorts and only a fine save from keeper Andrew Smart prevented them falling behind.

With the fierce wind making it very difficult for both sides the first half was evenly contested and only late on did Axmouth create a half-chance or two, but they eventually took a lead on the stroke of half-time when Matt Ellis prodded home from close range having been set up by George Harwood.

United were again lethargic at the start of the second half and they were duly punished as the visitors levelled. However, this seemed to be the ‘kick’ the home side needed to find a new gear and they began to take control, dominating possession and creating several chances. The finish did not match the approach until Man of the Match Reece Hales rifled home a stunning free kick just a few minutes after seeing a similar effort well saved.

The points were sealed in the dying minutes as Asa Sandman finished at close range following a fine move and delivery by Daniel Reynolds.

United boss Lawrie Forino said: “I’d say we toughed it out in this one. The wind really didn’t make it easy for either side, and Thorverton did work very hard throughout the contest. We seemed a bit off our game, but fought well, particularly in the second half and in the end deserved the win. It’s another vital three points for us and now we ant to keep this current run going.”

Next up for Forino’s men is a home meeting with Awliscombe on Saturday afternoon.
