In gale force winds and driving rain the intrepid footballers and golfers endeavoured to play golf, quite a few managing to play more than seven holes.

The two most determined players were Doug Board and Nick Rowe who managed the 18 holes, Pauline Standerwick also braving the weather to mark their card. The turnout was very good with 28 pairs (56 players) and there was a buffet to follow which was appreciated by the bedraggled players - with friends and family 90 people attended the buffet.

The results were as follows: Best pair Doug Board/Nick Rowe; 2, Paul Massam/Phil Collins; 3, Paul Clode/Ian Richards; Nearest the pin: Alan Fry; Best junior: Callum Somers; Best lady: Janet Dack; Best individual: Doug Board.

David Quinn won the raffle money which he donated to the charity; the amount raised for Hospiscare was £82. David Quinn very kindly offered the non golfers, who played in such horrendous conditions, a round of golf in better weather.

One inter-club match to report on in the Seniors' Section is the home game against Great Torrington. Although two close matches went to the last hole, the home team won handsomely by 41/2 v 1 1/2. Winners for Axe Cliff were Brian Blackwood/Chris Walker; Chris Jowett/Terry Jessup; Brian Wilkes/Geoff Hubbard and Geoff Hughes/John Tucker.

The half point was won by Gerry Turner/Mike Jamieson. Historically, the three club competition, in which the putter is compulsory, has produced some incredible scores and true to form, the winner Clive Davie, (18), amassed 40 points. Put in context this was two points more than last week's Stableford winner who carried the full allowance of 14 clubs.

In second place with 34 points came Nick Stanton (22) with third place going to Don Lee (25) with 33 points.
