Barnaby Treneer's 138 pony Talponciau Perfect Print stayed on dourly on very soft ground at the Eggesford point to point pony races to get home a neck ahead of his cousin Hannah Welch on Bronze Lawrance. After a false start, a group of five ponies stretched away in a field of nine going down the back straight and, as they turned for home it was between Barnaby, Hannah, and Pippa Glanville, 12, on Ravara Super Ted. Heidi Lewis, 12, on Bejowans Bouquet and Victoria Sleep, 11, on Newoak Second Thought, were in hot pursuit. A furlong and a half from home the three leaders were upsides, but Bronze Lawrance, despite having the better line on the inside berth, could just not quite get on terms at the line. Ravara Super Ted finised four lengths back in third.Barnaby, 10, from Buckfastleigh is also neck and neck with Hannah, 11, in the area points championship. Both have 28 points with Pippa third on 23. Result 138: 1, Talponciau Perfect Print, Barnaby Treneer; 2, Bronze Lawrance, Hannah Welch; 3, Ravara Super Ted, Pippa Glanville; 4, Bejowans Bouquet, Heidi Lewis. Nine ran, nk, 4l, 1.48. The 148s completed three parts of a circuit of the long Upcott track and there was a great battle in the closing stages between eventual winner George Shaw, 14, on Petite Pois and Hugo Hunt, 11, on Jack Sparrow. Shaw won cosily in the end. Chloe Grove, who enjoyed much success in the 138s on Summertime Blaze, did well on her new pony Flareon which ran on well in third.Josie Gordon, whose pony Whinnie Widget ran disappointingly, still heads the 148 points leaderboard on 20.Result: 148: 1, Petite Pois, George Shaw; 2, Jack Sparrow, Hugo Hunt; 3, Flareon, Chloe Grove; 4, Ivory Girl, Henry Armstrong. Seven ran. The next pony races are at the Dartmoor point to point at Flete Park near Modbury on Saturday, April 18 (First race 1pm).
