Thirty-seven seniors took part in the Axe Cliff December Medal last Friday, writes Janet Dack.

In perfect golfing conditions the scores were as unbelievable as the weather with the winner Bob Berry (23) hammering his way round in 83 shots for a nett 60.

Both halves were good, but the super inward half of 39 was helped by a two at the eleventh.

While congratulating Bob (now playing of 21!) we must have every sympathy with Dave Weston (20), who also shot a gross 83, but in Dave’s case for a 63 nett which would have been good enough to win on nearly every other occasion, but on Friday had to settle for second.

Next best, but over-shadowed by the first two were the 69 netts scored by Malcolm Glass (19) who won third place on countback from Neil Moorcraft (20), the player to miss out on the prizes.

There were four twos, from the afore-mentioned Bob, plus Hugh Willis, Tony Strong and David Lacey

On Monday the weather was once again very favourable for the Christmas Frolic with ladies and seniors.

The format was an 18-hole Greensome Stableford and it was won in commendable style by the combination of Helen Gaudie and John Pugh with 36 points.

It was fitting that the respective captains should be next in contention with equal scores of 34 points and on countback – or was it courtesy?

Second place went to lady captain Sandra Walker assisted by Gilbert Cox and third to seniors’ captain John White in partnership with Lesley Crawford.

After soup and mince pies and the presentation of prizes, the most enjoyable day was capped by the customary rendition of well-known Christmas Carols.
