Does anyone know the collective noun for bunkers? I'm betting on it being "a madness". You can go weeks and never see one, never mind visit one, but, once you start tipping into those beaches, it can feel like there is more sand than grass. The one redeeming feature was that it was a men's Stableford game against the course's par, so, after lighting that Hamlet cigar as in the old advert, you could pick your ball up and carry on!

One player who obviously hasn't experienced the discomfort of sand for weeks is Rob Willey who scored 40pts to take the Division 1 crown, ahead of second placed K Lloyd and third placed J Jacobs who both had 39s. Division 2 was won by Max Pipe with 38pts, just pipping B Morrison on count back with G Richards third with 36pts. Me? As the Drifters once put it so aptly, 'I've still got that sand in my shoes.'

l This week the Tuesday Mixed format was the popular Rye Foursomes. Thirty six members played in sunshine, off the main tees which everyone appreciated after a winter of mats. The winning pair, with 39 points on c/b, were Jenny Raison and Stan Squire. Second were Sheila Banks and Cyril Dann. Third were Gerda Brown and Chris Poole with 38, and fourth, Avril Shepherd and Paul Ritchie, with 37.

l In sunshine, but with a cold wind, the Ladies played the Coronation Foursomes. The winning pair, with a very good score of 40pts, were President Anne Davies and Diana Gee. Second place was taken by Rosemary Greenhorn and Jenny Raison with 38pts. Anne and Diana now qualify to play at Minchinhampton Golf Club in August.

l No excuses could be made for a bad round in this weeks Seniors' Four Ball Better Ball competition as it it was played in perfect conditions. Thirty seven pairs took part competing for the five prizes on offer.

Top spot went to the team of Fred Thomas and Trevor Bradley who finished with 44, one point clear of second and third placed teams of Brian Elkington and Michael Hunt and Pat Purtell with Mike Peskin.

Jim Wallis and Alan Lane were fourth and the Ron Cooper/Morgan Walters combination took fifth spot.

"Hole of the Day" could have been awarded to former captain Ron Jones who, despite not possessing the lowest handicap these days, demonstrated how it should be done by scoring a birdie on the 15th, the most difficult hole on the course.

There were mixed fortunes in the two matches played this week.

There was a win at Axe Cliff by four and a half to two and a half but, once again, the Sidmouth course proved insurmountable and resulted in a five and a half to one and a half defeat.
