On Saturday, Robin Carter became the fourth AVR to complete one of the toughest fell challenges in the country, writes Dave Mutter.
The Bob Graham Round is about 65 miles long with 27,000 feet of climb (more than three Grizzlies along but eight up and down) taking in 42 Lake District summits and can be completed at any time.
The going includes the complete range of Lakeland terrain - much is runnable but some of the rockier sections are like crossing the big blocks of the Seaton Hole sea defences and a couple of stretches border on rock climbing.
Despite some very challenging issues including high winds, two rather bad falls and the general emotional turmoil of: ‘what on earth am I doing here?’ Robin completed the round in 25.5 hours.
She sadly missed the 24-hour cut-off to qualify for membership of the Bob Graham Club, but just finishing is a massive achievement and, indeed, only about a third of the attempts registered with the club are successful.
