Chard and District swimmers bag medals in Open Water meet at Weymouth

Seven members of Chard and District Swimming Club competed in the South West Open Water Swimming Championships held at Preston beach, Weymouth, writes Heather Pullinger.
The Championships comprise of various race distances from 750 metres through to the gruelling 10km, all held under FINA (The International Swimming Federation) rules which do not permit the wearing of wetsuits.
Millie Downes and Abi Greenslade won a gold and silver respectively for the South West Region and Somerset in the girls 750 metres.
In the girls 1500 metre event, 16-year-old Florence Swan won a gold South West Regional and Somerset medal.
In the 17-year-old category Lauren van den Barselaar won a South West Regional gold medal and silver for Somerset in the 17-18 yrs category. Also competing in her first open water championships was 13-year-old Helen Underwood.
Chard and District boys competing in the 1500 metres comprised Henry Taswell swimming in the 13/14 years category, who won a South West Regional silver medal and gold for Somerset whilst Ben Greenslade won a gold South West Regional medal and gold for Somerset in 15 years category.
Conditions on the day were quite testing with a keen south westerly breeze creating some challenging swimming on what was a cool overcast afternoon with sea temperatures of just 16 degrees. Numerous swimmers were plucked from the water unable to continue due to the conditions however all the Chard and District team finished strongly albeit a little cold.
