Chard Swimming sent teams to compete in 20 relay events at the recent ASA South West Regional Relay Championships held at Millfield pool, writes Hannah Pullinger.
With girls and boys teams swimming in both freestyle and medley relays all teams swam superbly and 12 teams made it through the heats to reach the finals later that day.
It was an exciting ‘finals’ session with Chard teams in most finals, and the teams again pulled out all the stops to achieve some top positions.
Despite missing some swimmers due to exams, there was still outstanding swimming. The boys’ 11/12 team which included Iain Ross, Ryan Adair, Leo Bonning and Lewis Pearson, won bronze in the medley relay, and came fifth in the freestyle, and the boys’ 15 and over team, comprising Luke van den Barselaar, Dan Andrews, Ben Fowler and Jake Hallam, won bronze in both their finals.
The boys’ 9/10 team of Michael Moulding, Leo Bonning, Oliver Bright and Joss Copeman came seventh in both the medley and freestyle finals.
The girls’ 11/12 A team with Abi Bonning, Tamsin Edge, Elisha Hawkins and Susan Ross came in fifth in the medley and sixth in the freestyle final.
The boys’ 13/14 age fielded two teams with Joe Spurway, Oliver Bilbie, Jamie Lillington, Ashley Lillington, Jay Kindred, Jamie Pullinger, Paul Harrison and Rory Dyer all swimming. The A team came fourth in the freestyle and fifth in the medley finals, whilst the B team came sixth in both.
Also swimming were: 9/10-year- olds: Daisy Brett, Nancy Doble, Xanthe Dyer, Jess Fowler, Megan Herbert, Abi Morgan, Millie Shrubb, Helen Underwood, 11/12-year-olds: Ella Harvey, Grace Haskins, Somer Horsfield, Jess Patch, and Abigail Phillips, 13/14-year olds: Melissa Hanson, Daniella Edge, Hope Horsfield, and Mollie Simpson.
