For the first time, Chard and District Swimming Club juniors had the opportunity to take part in a friendly ‘Imps’ gala against some other local clubs, writes Hannah Pullinger.
Swimmers aged between nine and 12, many of whom had not competed in galas outside of the club, spent an enjoyable evening at Exmouth Leisure Centre, competing against other clubs including Exmouth, Torquay, Exeter, Kingsbridge and Sidmouth.
The gala covered a combination of individual and team events, and the atmosphere was great with tremendous team support, helping Chard to achieve an overall fourth position.
Coach June was really proud of their performance, and hopes it has not only given more of the younger swimmers a chance to represent their club, but also a friendly taste of competitive swimming which will spur them on to achieving more.
Congratulations, and well done, to all those taking part: Simon Davis, Ben Webb, Will Hawkins, Oli Bright, Louis Whittome, Jevan Hampton Rumbold, Jimmy Brett, Oliver Collins, Joe Swan, Lyndon Smith, Sam Platten, Joe Shrubb, Louis Rood, Jack Morgan, Jamie Porter,
Megan Herbert, Posy Doble, Phoebe Clark, Mia Huntley, Flo McConnell, Jess Fowler, Holly Bigger, Helen Underwood, Charlotte Young, Freya Rex, Abbie Herbert, Emilia Smith, Leonie Housham, Maddie Veevers.
Nine other swimmers from the club recently competed at the Bournemouth Open Meet chasing best times for regional qualification.
Fifteen-year-old Lewis Pearson gained three regional qualification times in 100 and 200m freestyle and 50m butterfly, and had a successful weekend, taking a total of five medals: gold in 100m freestyle and 200m backstroke, silver in 200m freestyle and 50m breaststroke and bronze in 50m butterfly. Melissa Hanson, 17, also won a bronze in 200m freestyle.
Other swimmers taking part were: Grace Lambert (9), Millie Downes (11), Harriet Copeman (11,) Imogen Waterhouse (12), Oliver Bright (12), Paul Harrison (16), Mollie Simpson (16).
The club are always looking for new members interested in competitive swimming particularly age seven and upwards; anyone interested in joining the club can attend for a free trial. For more information visit www.chardswimming.org.uk
