The past fortnight has finally seen the Chardstock bowls season get under way with little interruption from the weather, even if we have, on some occasions, needed many layers of warm clothing, writes Vaughan Fletcher.
In the Exeter and District Over-60s Triples League, both of the Chardstock teams have made successful starts to their respective campaigns.
Chardstock A entertained Topsham B and defeated them 54-22 with wins on both rinks; Mike Copp, I Rolph and I Porter (24-15) and K Wakelin, M Toms and N Denslow (30-7).
The B team entertained Belmont B and defeated the Exeter side 47-15. Once again they enjoyed wins on both rinks; G Bodily, B Howard and T Dredge (23-8) and A Badley, D Eldridge and W Kerr (24-7).
Of the four friendly matches played, the club didn’t fare quite as well, winning only one, and that was the away match at Merriott which was won 88-53; P Waddington, A Callagan, E Rolph and D Hatcliffe (18-18); V Fletcher, N Mugridge, S Hatcliffe and J Rolph (201-2); A Bradley, R Pratt, K Wakelin and S Jeffrey (21-14) and C Bradford, J Pratt, G Campbell and J Keats (29-9).
A home meeting with Madeira was lost 59-51; V Fletcher, J Rolph and J Porter (18-10); J Keats, W Kerr and M Toms (12-14); J Marks, B Howard and T Dredge (15-17) and A Callagan, K Wakelin and N Denslow (6-18).
Next up a visit to Chard, which ended in a 10 shot defeat at 82-72; J Tinkler, S Hatcliffe and J Rolph (10-21); P Waddington, Adam Dredge and Ann Dredge (19-18); K Tinkler, E Rolph and S Jeffery (9-15); A Callagan, D Hatcliffe and G Campbell (14-17) and N Mugridge, J Marks and T Dredge (20-11).
Finally, of the friendly matches, a visit to Ilminster saw Chardstock well beaten, going down 123-71; P Waddington, M Copp, R Pratt and Ann Dredge (20-18); C Bradford, N Mugridge, J Pratt and N Denslow (16-22); V Fletcher, A Callagan, T Dredge and S Jeffery (11-25); K Wakelin, N Barron, G Campbell and J Rolph (16-17) and V Barron, D Emery, J Marks and Adam Dredge (8-41).
There was one other match played and it produced some good news for the men in the annual ‘Battle of the Sexes’, with their success over the ladies in what was a hard-fought contest.
The men eventually won 60-48 with the scores as follows: P Waddington, E Rolph and S Jeffrey 22; A Badley, A Callagan and D Eldridge 16; V Barron, C Bradford and A Sebright 12; N Barron, V Fletcher and J Keats 20; J Tinkler, N Mugridge and G Campbell 14; K Tinkler, B Howard and J Milford 24.
