On a bright and slightly overcast Sunday morning down in Brighton, five AVRs assembled to participate in the Brighton marathon, writes Dave Mutter.

The course winds its way around the town, passing landmarks such as the famous Brighton Pavilion and iconic seafront.

It then heads east along the front, past the marina and loops around Ovingdean before heading back into Brighton, down through Hove town and back east again.

The final sting in the tail is the turn back west towards the power station before heading back to the pier for the final five or so miles and the finish.

Chris Hill finished 3,839th out of 19,772 in a time of 4:02:29; Alan Morbey was close behind, finishing 3,839 in 4:06:56 and then came Caroline French, running in her first marathon, and finishing in an amazing time of 4:21:31 in 5,094th place. The next AVR home was Yvette Hill, completing her first road marathon, finishing in a time of 04:27:18 to bag 5,610th place.

Michelle Dobson was just behind Yvette, with her time being 4:29:14 and her place, 5,795th.

All just beat the rain showers that started in the afternoon.

A thoroughly well-deserved rest and maybe a drink or two were in order.

The support and noisy encouragement from the fantastic crowds for virtually the entire route spurred all of the competitors, from the fastest to the wonderful charity runners. Well done, Brighton and the supporters.

In other AVR news, six members took part in the first race of the Yeovilton Summer 5k series.

First home of the six was Ollie Caute, finishing eighth overall in a time of 16:24. Next was Chet Gillespie, 18th, 17:14; Terry Emmett, 21st, 17:32; Matt Hewer, 24th, 18:04; Chris Keeffe, 66th, 20:52 and James Ashforth, 76th, 21:15.
